I'm sure you've all seen those "donate your car"billboards?

Perhaps many of you have seen the donate your boat billboards?

Well I was looking for a small boat that I could take fishing and I found one on Ebay through a place called Boat Angel Ministries.

It was on ebay (Item # 110905092237) and it claimed to be a 72 duo craft with a 1959 Johnson 35 hp motor on it.

I won the auction and only paid $152.50 for it (Plus the ministries $249.00 admin fee (no complaints))

They do have a refund policy if the item was misrepresented.

Once I got the boat home, I ran the model and serial (which were NOT given on the auction page). And it turns out it isn't a Johnson motor. According to the Model number (22DE17B) and the serial number (731165) it is a GALE engine.. and it's not 35 hp, it's only 25. And it's not a 59', it's a 1960 (so a smidge newer)

1960 Models
25 H.P. Deluxe Electric

22DE17B

The motor is NOT seized but has been sitting for 12 years. I haven't been able to start it yet, but I'm thinking so long as I get the bad fuel out, clean everything and maybe replace a few parts, it should run.

My question is, should I ask for a refund since the boat was misrepresented? The motor is not what it states, and to be honest, although I know that Johnson, Evinrude and Gale all kind of were together at one point, is the Gale just a cheap johnson knock off? am I going to play hell finding any parts for this thing?

I love the classics, which is why I wanted this boat in the first place, but if I can't get it running, it's of little use to me..

I have until tomorrow to enact my refund policy if I so choose, but did I really lose out?

Please let me know as soon as you can if you think I got a bum deal. .

Thanks,

SgtDeadeye

It looks like they rely only on the information the donater gives them and don't know a whole lot about the product they're selling. Should they try a little harder? Maybe, but who knows what they have going on.

I'd just fix it up and have some fun.

Re: Decieved, but should I complain

Parts shouldn't be an issue. The 25hp Gale was 95% Johnrude, with the exception of some cowling & trim bits. All of the consumables are straight-up Johnrude parts (waterpump, carb, ignition, etc.), many available right here on iBoats...

And they state right in the auction that the boat's description is based on what the donor said on their donation form. The donor likely had no clue what they had, which is probably why they donated it in the first place...

Bottom line - you got a decent enough, fixable boat, motor & trailer for about $400. I think you got a deal...

Only if it was intentionally miss-represented. Most likely whomever wrote the description didn't really know what they were looking at.

Parts should not be that bad to find. Compression, spark, fuel.........

I don't think it was intentionally misrepresented, and as long as i can get parts to get it running, I'm happy with the deal.. thanks for the advice as always

Re: Decieved, but should I complain

so you thought you were getting a 53 year old motor but it's a 52 year old motor? With no name on it and it's the wrong name? On a $400 boat/motor/trailer? from a junk boat auction? What in the world would you complain about? wouldn't you be embarassed?

Don't be that guy.

Re: Decieved, but should I complain

I've been down the boat angel auction road twice.

1 -- Boat was supposed to be located 24 miles away. It was actually located 170+ miles away, and I could only pick it up on 2 days, five weeks off in the future. Sorry, deal breaker. First they lied about the location, second, I was going to be 300 miles the other direction on those 2 days.

2 -- Boat documents "disappeared" when I went to pick it up. AND, the engine that ran well last year........ WAS MISSING THE HEAD !!! DEAL BREAKER.
