Hey everybody............looking for opinions. I have a 1983 Johnson 50hp. It runs smooth and I have few complaints with it. I have the chance to pick up a 55hp 'Rude of about the same year for about $150.00. The 'Rude needs a lower unit rebuild, and it has been sitting on it's side for quite some time out in the weather. My question---------is it worth it to get the 'rude and stick the money into it for the lower unit and i'm sure a carb rebuild + any other costs to pick up another 5 hp??

well i would check spark and compression, before buying, or you could be in for some expensive 5 horses. actually think by the time you are thru they are going to be expensive for that little change in power. i think if you maximize you current set up would be better. proper prop, engine height, trim angle, balance load in the boat.

Depends on the year how similar they are but you could use the 55 for parts.
