My 20' Sunbird is a cool fishing boat but it has no storage. I am looking for a box to mount in place of the passenger's pedistal seat - something like 4' L X 2' W X 2' H. The Betterway Products boxes would work, but weigh 60 to 100 pounds. Does anyone have a lead on something a little lighter?

Sounds like a nice "do-it-yourself" project.
take measurments, make a box out of exterior plywood. Coat it with polyester resin. Paint over it. You will save money and gain satisfaction of creating something useful. That is if you like building things. :)

Re: Deck Box

I just saw some boxes w/ lids in Cabellas marine catalog. I think made out of plastic. Advertised as suitable for storage, live boxes, etc.

Use a cooler, then if you need a fish box its done, also you can use it as a live well with a small pump added.

Re: Deck Box

Thanks for all three ideas. I've thought seriously about building my own. I'm not sure it would look as nice as the factory units, but it would be lighter and just the right size.

I did not find the boxes Ed mentioned at Cabela's, but their house brand ice chests are awesome. They have locks that I had not found with other coolers. This might be the way to go.

Re: Deck Box

I replaced my seat pedestals with welded aluminum boxes (fabricated locally). They are waterproof and strong enough to mount the seats on and are hinged so that the seat can flip forward to open them up. Add hasps for locking.

Re: Deck Box

Ed - Thanks for getting that site for me. The boxes are back-ordered for now. I don't know if I am patient enough to wait. It would be nice if they had more info. I can't tell how heavy they are, how strong they are, how rainproof they are, or whether I could mount a hasp. If I don't come up with anything else, I may order one and see what it looks like. Thanks again.

D. - That could be the answer. I'll do some pricing to see if I can afford it. Thanks for the suggestion.
