I have completely stripped the old wood and foam out of my boat and I'm not sure what preperation I have to do with my 3/4 marine grade plywood and rivets before installing them. I have searched on other forums and seen people using gluvit and resin to seal the deck. Is this necessary? Could I just use a marine grade wood sealer? Also I am planning on putting in carpet so I'm not sure if that makes a difference

Re: deck replacement question on 1970 Holiday

I would gluvit the hull for extra insurance. do all the seams and rivets.

as for the plywood, i would coat the bottom and sides with resin and glass over the top for the best results.

if i can sway your choice away from carpet... it is one of the main reasons that decks rot. the carpet holds the moisture in and against the deck. I would skip it, or if you are dead set on it use a snap in carpet that you can remove when you come home from the water.

Ben Andy is 100% right on the only thing I will add is if you wnt you can use something like Thompsons on the wood for your deck but you will be redoing it agin sooner this way than you would if you double coated the back and sides with resin and then put a layer of glass on the top once its in the boat. I agree on the carpet ( if you must use carpet ) do it with snaps so you can remove the carpet if it gets wet ( its a boat its gonna get wet :D ) that way you can take the carpet out once you get home and let it dry outside of the boat and also let the deck dry .
