I installed some cheap 'Depot carpet a few years ago with poor results. It got burnt within the first year, even though it's stored covered (the AZ sun is brutal). We've lived with the dark areas and pillings for the past couple seasons, but now it's time to re-do again. I'm thinking toward a gel-coat finish instead of carpet this time around. I know it'll be an absolute PITA to get all the glue up ('cause if a little was good, alot was...) from laying it last time.
My question, however, how level does the deck need to be for a roll-on finish (or even marine vinyl for that matter)? When I did the carpet I was suprised at how uneven the deck surface was. For instance, some areas seem to have a raised 'vein' running along the deck fore to aft. Will I simply need to sand these areas down or is there some type of filler that works well, or both?
Ultimately, I'm not opposed to doing carpet again; but I'll be sure not to skimp on price/quality this time around. If doing carpet, are there any brands that seem to hold up well to UV? I'm also not overly concerned w/ manufacture 'promises' of 3-5yrs from fading, etc, but rather input from people who've actually experienced the product and seen the results. Heck, even my overly expensive, 'guaranteed not to fade for 5yrs', cover started losing color within the first year...but I digress (and it does keep the rain/sun out).
Any thoughts or ideas are appreciated.
