Deep Cycle Battery Leakage

I have a 4 year old Stowaway Marine Deep Cycle battery that leaks battery acid from the top refill covers. Over the winter the battery has been in my basement on a piece of wood with an automatic trickle charger on it. The battery constantly gasses (can hear it coming from the refilling covers). There is acid under the covers and leaking down the side of the battery. The water/acid level was full at the start of the winter and now is to the top of the cells.

What is causing the acid to leak out the top covers?

Should I get a new battery?

Thanks for any info.

over charging. the battery is getting hot, and the acid is expanding. better check your charger, and take the battery to the auto parts store, they will load test for free. i had a 1 year old group 27, 1150 CCA go bad. Trojan warrantied it no charge.

Re: Deep Cycle Battery Leakage

you may also have too much electrolyte in the battery. In which case it will overflow when charging.

Re: Deep Cycle Battery Leakage

Trickle chargers are rarely Automatic. Most trickle chargers will over charge and not shut down. Check the voltage on your battery after the charger been on several hours. If it over 13.8 Volts do not leave the trickle charger attached. Automatic Smart charger weither 20 amps or 5 amps will shut down and not over charge.

All Vented batteries vent some gas when charging and you may need to clean the top about 1 time a year.
