Deep cycle used for starting?

I'm sure this topic has been covered, but is there really any harm in using a deep cycle for the engine battery? It's rated to something like 550cca's. I have another deep cycle running the other stuff on the boat. Not my choice, it's what came with the vessel when I bought it.

Not the best choice, Chris. 550 CCA is rather low for turning over a big 4 stroke.

Starting batteries have lower internal impedance and can supply more starting current.

I would look for a swap.

Good luck. :)

That's what I figured. I don't know what the guy was thinking putting in a deep cycle. Do I really need a 'marine' starting battery or will a decent automotive work?

It all depends on what you are cranking. The difference between auto and RV/MARINE ,batteries is the way the cells are encapsulted. They are tougher but do'nt seem to last as long? You go figure.

Does the boat start with out trouble ? , if it does leave it alone ... mine has 2 deep cycles in it . it starts fine ... all though they are 850cca and not 550cca . But if it works ... it works .
