deffective starter?

I've been trying to crank my volvo penta 4.3 engine ,but it is not turning my starter just making a grinding noise but the motor is no turning any advice on where to start to solve my problem? battery fully charged.

Voltmeter across the battery terminals & hit the key.
Voltmeter between the +Starter post & engine block & hit the key.

What results do you get?

If starter spins.... grinding. try to turn engine by hand, front bolt on pulley works well. then try to crank with starter again. you could be missing a tooth or teeth on flywheel.

sounds like your bendix on the starter is stripped or like jackd said teet on the flywheel:facepalm:
