Degrease and shrink wrap

Hello, I have a 1983 50HP 4 cyl and after years of tiliting the motor, some gas has managed to seep out the carbs and spill onto the "deck" area that surrounds the powerblock and has become increasingly greasy. I noticed that there is some sort of a spill shelf directly under the carbs that has a little drain that looks to drain somewhere around the base of the block, and I am wondering how I would go about degreasing this area of the motor. The powerblock and all the sensitive areas of the motor are totally clean, just the base needs cleaning. Also, I noticed that there are two wires I can see coming from under the flywheel that lead down and towards the front of the motor and they are mildly rotting, the case of the wire has deteriorated and the wire itself is nearly green. I have some shrink wrap and can i wrap these wires in this and shrink the wrap to strengthen these wires or no? Thank you!

Re: Degrease and shrink wrap

Also I have still not been able to find what wire to connect my Tachometer to. If anybody knows which wire it is please let me know!

Re: Degrease and shrink wrap

I use Brake Clean to clean hard to reach places on my motors then use an air gun to blow it clean. Using shrink tubing on old wires as described will work on some wires but only for a time. The wires from under the flywheel are going to need to be replaced , as they will cause trouble down the line. Pulling the flywheel and seeing just what the rest of them look like will tell if you should just replace them now rather than putting it off to a later time.
The tach wire should hook to one of the wires comming from under the flywheel to the recitifier if it is the small square one with only 3 term studs on it. Other recitifers are diffrent and have diffrent places to hook the tack to.

If you have the small 3 post recitifier , the tach sender wire needs to hook to one of the wires comming from under the flywheel. Other recitifiers diffrent and we need to know just what recitifier you have.

If I take the flywheel off to replace those wires, wont I need to re adjust the timing and all the adjustments on the motor? Also, how should I go about replacing these wires, do I splice into the broken one or what? Thanks

If I'm correct, those will be your stator wires (usually yellow) and are an integral part of the stator. The stator produces the power for your charging system and electrical system. You will probably need to replace it. If you will mark the position of your flywheel and make sure it goes back on exactly where it was, no timing will be necesary. While you're under the flywheel, check the trigger also. If you don't have one, buy a service manual. Post your motor make and SN and I'm pretty sure you'll get a nice, concise reply. Good Luck!

Thanks for the insight; it is a mercury 50hp serial number 6308464 4 cylinder. I do have a service manual but have no idea what you mean by marking the flywheel. Also, there is no way to splice into the stator and run new wires from it?
