We have a Frigidaire stand-alone dehumidifier in our basement of our old house. Right now the temperature is 70 degrees and the humidity 70 percent. Central air has been off for several days.

If the humidifier runs for a long period of time and although it does not happen all of the time, white ice will form on the back of the unit. Eventually it will become a solid mass of ice, blocking most of the air flow.

Used to work fine when we first purchased it used, taking the humidity as low as 50%.

Any ideas?

We have had this happen when room temps drop to around 70 degrees. Not a lot you can do. Make sure the coils are clean and the filter is clean as well. Rub your fingers across the coils and see if any dirt comes off. They are like magnets for dust and dirt.

I agree with Euro, sounds like your coils are dirty blocking the airflow. It doesn't take much to do that. Once you get them thawed out, and coils cleaned. Try adjusting your stat so that the unit cycles. If it can't cycle on and off while running continuously, they will ice up. It also could be your fan is not running up to speed or the fan blades have a buildup of dirt also. Dirty fan blades also cuts down on airflow.

If it has a filter, make sure it is clean. Blocked filters wil lmake them freeze up also.
