I am having a problem with shifting a volvo penta 275 into reverse. When I move the throttle to reverse it will not engage, but if I give the engine more RPM's it will then shift into reverse but very hard, this happens the first time I shift into reverse, after that it seems to be ok! any ideas???

Re: Delayed shift in reverse

A one-lever remote is supposed to idle in neutral when the lever is in the very middle position (often vertical, held in place with a 'click'). When moving either forward or backward it should push/pull the gear cable first, then add throttle.
Both directions should allow gears to engage completely before adding throttle and this is managed by cable/linkage adjustment (supposing nothing mechanical is wrong).

I'd check all these adjustments first. If no improvement I'd check if the remote box works OK.

Re: Delayed shift in reverse

ok,when I shift the throttle from the center position(neutral) to reverse it clicks once, when I continue to move the throttle more to the rear the engine RPM's increase and then bang it engages. Now this morning I moved the throttle to reverse and watched the propeller, it was turning, but as I move the throttle more to the rear, again the RPM's increase (normal) then bang. It almost seems like it is not engaging the gears completly, forward gear is fine. Last thing this is the second season I've had the boat, at the end of last season I changed the lower unit oil, I thought that this particular drive used 10w-30 motor oil. When I drained the oil out came a mint green heavy oil (gear oil?). I replaced it with 10-w30 motor oil like the manual states. Could this cause it to do that? should I put gear oil back in since last season I had no problems?
