My brother just fitted the new delco starter to our 1983 merc 485,, it work great and really wangs the engine over much faster than the old prestolite, but he is confused by the R terminal on the solenoid, on the old solenoid there was a wire that went from it straight to the coil to give max juice on starting, the little posts were marked S and i on the new one they are marked S and R, what does R mean? he tried the extra oomph to the coil wire on it and the fuse blew?

The R is the terminal that should go up to positive terminal of the coil bypassing the resistor. Which fuse blew?

Is the wire from the R terminal being connected to the positive side of the coil...not the negative?

Next time, connect a wire to the R terminal...don't hook it to anything and measure the voltage of it while cranking.

wire from R is connected to + terminal and 12.7volts at R when cranking,, if we connect just the red and purple or just the alternator exciter wire to the R terminal it starts fine, but when we connect both to the R terminal as it was on the remote solenoid it blows the fuse (20amp)??

Weird for sure. When the engine is not running, key off, wire from R terminal disconnected...measure the resistance from the R terminal to ground.

Does the fuse blow when you turn the key to the "on" position or does it blow when you turn the key past "on" to the "start" position?

Personally, I have never seen nor heard of a solenoid with an R terminal. So can't say what it is, does, or how it works. Do you have a part number and manufacturer for that solenoid?
The other thing is, the 485 never used the Delco starter, only the prestolite without a solenoid attached. Since the Delco starter has a solenoid attached, are you sure you have the wiring done correctly?
The solenoid with the R termianl, is it the one on the starter, or is it the slave solenoid mounted on the engine/manifold.

Billy, please tell me you aren't trying to use that Seloc OMC stringer manual to try and fix a Mercruiser again are you.

Hmmm...didn't catch the 485 in the original post!

I have seen solenoids with the R terminal on them before.

Then, what's the R stand for?
S was for Start, I was for Ignition (went to the coil) R= ?????????

Maybe is the main word. That's why I would like to know the manufacturer and PN of the solenoid so we might be able to find out for sure what the R does. From the sounds of things, It could stand for Replace fuse. :p ;)
