Installation is on a 1983 CrisCraft Scorpion with a Mercruiser 140 and I'm trying to understand the setup. I'm converting from points to electronic ignition. My question is about the wiring connection. The wiring harness has two wires that connected to the (+) on coil of points/distributor setup. One was solid purple and the other purple/yellow. I traced each wire with the following results. The purple goes to the starter switch and the purple/yellow connects to the (+) on starter solenoid. When ignition switch is turned to "On" I get system voltage in the purple wire. No voltage reading in the purple/yellow. I'm assuming that current will flow in the purple/yellow when ignition switch turned to "Start". The Delco EST coil recommends system voltage (at least 10.9 volts). I checked resistance in purple wire and found no resistance. Is voltage to points, when "Starting", ensured by sending voltage to coil from two sources (starter and ignition switch)? Once started, is voltage to points only from ignition? I'm pretty confident that the connection for the new Delco EST ignition purple wire should be with the solid purple wire on the wiring harness, but wanted to hear from someone out there who's done this installation before.
Thank you,
Charles Versoza

When you say Delco EST are you saying that you have a computer to run it. Or do you mean Delco HEI. An EST will not operate properly without a computer.
A Delco HEI requires a full 12 volts from the ignition switch. If you connect to the wire on the starter it will not run. The wire from the starter only supplies voltage when starting the engine. It bypasses the resistance wire from the ignition switch. The resistance wire is not needed for an electronic ignition. You do not need the wire from the starter at all just a wire with no resistor from the run position on the ignition switch to the distributor.
