Hi I have a 79' Mercuiser 260 with a alpha one drive and I replaced points distributor with a Delco est kit. Now I have a couple questions, after setting initial timing and switching to run mode, is it normal for timing to advace at idle 10 deg. ? I guess I'm not very familiar with electronic advance, any insight would be apreciated. Second the instructions say to check total timing at 4000 rpms. How do you do that at the dock ? When I increase rpms to 2000 the timing doesn't seem to move much from the above mentioned advance. I already double checked wiring with marine tech that sold me the ignition, just looking for some insight.

Re: delco est ignition swap

When you are in base timing mode, the timing is locked so it won't move. You then set the timing to spec. When you take it out of base timing, the timing will change and move around. That is why you have to put it in base timing to set it.
You can run the engine up to 4000 in the water in neutral to check the advance.

Re: delco est ignition swap

Thanks for the info DonS, I checked the total timing at 4000 rpms and it was 19 deg. Is this correct? Do you think I should regap plugs to .045 with this ignition? I'll be going out in the morning fishing, I find out how this ignition works then. Thanks again for info DonS.
