Depth Finder Question????

Have an older model depth finder which has a dial type face with a "spinner" which produces a red dot to indicate depth on the dial. When on, the spinner works but reads 0-3 feet regardless of the actual depth. A wire runs from the unit to the transducer which is mounted beneath the V berth. I guess it's the transducer.....it looks like a ~1" pvc pipe about 6" long sealed to the hull, with the wire going down thru the top. Question....Does the transducer ping thru the hull? Because there is no thru hull type fitting on the outside of the hull. Just trying to make this thing work. If anybody has any ideas, I'd be grateful.....Gary

Re: Depth Finder Question????

These units are known as "flasher" units. I personally do not know if they will work thru a hull like the newer units. They will not work thru an aluminum hull. You may havea loose wire inside the unit. There are shops that specialize in reparing these units, but since you can buy a new unit so cheap now days, it probably isn't worth the cost to fix it.

Gadoo
I remember the old flasher. Some people still like them but for me get a good lcd unit.

Many fibergalss boats you can shoot thru hull with only about a 10 percent loss in signal. For this to work transducer must be epoxied to the hull and have no air bubbles between transdicer and hull. If it is loose it will not work. If it is loose you can build a dam around it with clay then fill with water and it should work. The key is no air bubbles between transducer and hull.

One question is it possible you do not have range set deep enough to see bottom?? You will always get a flicker in the zero to 3 foot range from surface clutter. Also have you tried turning up sensativity all the way or until see actual bottom signal.
