descaling thermostat housing?

i have some minor scaling/corrosion on my thermostat housing, [not in the areas swept by the impeller]. for the sake of professionalism and good craftsmanship, I'm interested in cleaning it up a little before I put it back together. i'm not a pro, just a hobbyist, btw. was thinking of soaking it in CLR, but before I do, i thought i'd run it by you all.

I do not know what CLR would do to the paint because usually you put chrome pieces in CLR, so maybe someone else can help you out in this department.
