90 H.P. Johnson outboard motor (fuel injected) on a pontoon boat. The boat is 2-3
years old. The engine starts, however, when you put the engine in forward
or reverse it stalls. Also, when you put the engine in neutral and rev the
engine it stalls. First time out it did not happen. Second and third time out it happened after about 10 minutes of running and now stalls when put in gear. Ideas? Also, this is not our boat but is on loan for the summer.

Stop and call the owner of the boat and outboard. Don't start wrenching around on an outboard that doesn't belong to you, please.

Once you've talked to the owner, do what he/she says to do. You may have to take this to a dealer for service, or the owner may want to come and look at it for him/herself.

This problem could be lots of things, from ignition to fuel. I'd really feel uncomfortable about doing anything to another person's outboard.

Trust me, we are not going to do much of anything. Just looking to see if it might be something simple like a loose wire or fuel line problem. Owner's son will be back from vacation this weekend and we will discuss with him.

It could be a lot of things. That's the trouble. You could check the fuel connection and the battery connections, but I'd leave the rest until the owner or his sone shows up.

Thanks for all the replies. Turned out to be a nylon rope wrapped around the prop. Cut it off, ran the boat, all seems fine. Sometimes it is the simplest things that drive us crazy.

Good deal! That rope thing will do it every time. Good for you for finding it!
