Destroyed my prop today !

Did some fishing at my local lake today. While running to another spot to fish, we hit a shoal !

We were running in about 7-10ft of water at 30mph when we ran over some rocky hump (not marked by buoys)...thank God that I let my motor hang freely cause if it was locked down, I probably would have ruined my LU and/or transom.

I lost some of my skeg, too. :(

This is the pic of my spare prop. Will this missing chip cause any issues? I was thinking about filling the chip with JB weld. Thoughts?

Don't try to fill that old prop with anything. Run it but if you get vibration then either rebuild it or replace it. Shoals suck!!

That looks like a 150 to 200 dollar prop. I wouldn't run it at all. 3000 rpm will cause some vibration. Look to see if the straight notch has a crack that goes deeper into the blade. Cut a piece from the destroyed prop and fit it in the notch. Bevel the edges on both sides and take it to a good welding shop. probably $50 to weld and fifty to finish and polish if you didn't want to play with it.

Sorry to hear about this, hitting the LU sux and at least you did not do more damage. I would not run a prop with a chip because of vibration. I had a dinged up prop and ran it a few times and did not seem like there was any vibration however, today with my new prop, it was painfully obvious that there was significant vibration not at wot but at mid range. Good luck and I hope this all works out.

I believe it's original OEM prop, so no idea what it costs. I'm starting to look for a new prop now. Def NOT going to go through the trouble/expense to fix it if I can't just JB weld the area and sand it smooth.

There is no cracking at the chip site btw.

Clean it really well, rough it up with some 80g sand paper clean it with acetone and jb weld it. Use the jb-weld for aluminum. It'll hold until you get a new prop.

That's good news. I only need the prop to get me around a few times on the water til I get a new prop.

This is going to be my first prop purchase so I need some advice (if I'm better off starting a new thread about this subject, let me know)

Boat- Glasspar Avalon fiberglass runabout 700lbs
Motor- 1977 Evinrude 75hp Manual tilt 230lbs ( i think)
Current prop- 13 1/4 X 17P
(I haven't run a tach on my boat yet, so I won't pick proper pitch til I do)

I'm looking for a prop with a little more bite. I raised my motor a couple notches to get the cav plate to ride on the surface at WOT, but it's cost me a bit of holeshot. Now, I can feel the 'prop slip'(not spun hub) as I take off from a standstill. It's not a big deal for me currently, but once I start towing a tube in the summertime... the prop slip will probably be a bit more noticeable at holeshot.

My budget is very tight, so I really need to find a 'decent' prop in the $100 range if possible.

iBoats have props for under $100. Most likely you will need rpm@wot for answering your questions though. In the mean time the JB weld may or may not hold. I personaly would just try it the way it is, and see if it vibrates. Is it the same pitch as the wall hanger reminder?

I hit a under water road on Big Green lake once, only going about 7 mph, and completely tore a blade off, and folded the other two over, bent skeg at 30 degrees. Good thing I had a spare, and didnt do any damage to the LU gears, It was the first day of a week long vacation. Turned out all good though.

Good Luck

Re: Destroyed my prop today !

Can't tell you bow many times I have done that, I am on my 3rd lower and finnally gave up on the skinny water but I have whacked bottom at 30 and it isn't fun.

I wouldn't worry to much about that little chip, I don't think jb will stick or it will make it run bad, file the edge down and run it till you get a new one, probably wouldn't do any long high rpm runs though.

I am fortunate in that I can weld so I normally fix my own props and have actually rebuilt them that look like yours.

As for the chip in the skeg, again just file it down so it doesn't have any sharp edges and run it, won't hurt anything.

Yes don't worry about the chip unless you get vibration.Even then your not planing to run very long.
It appears you have the large gearcase.Hopefully you can get some good numbers with your spare.

Re: Destroyed my prop today !

I thought the 13 spline was the small gear case. The larger HP motors V6's have 15 spline, and I thought they were the large gear case. My 1987 90HP V4 has 13 spline, and was told it was the small gear case, even though it doesnt really look any smaller then the V6's I've seen. Maybe I am learning something new?

Re: Destroyed my prop today !

I just looked at IBoats props, and yes they say a 1977 75HP 13spline is the large gear case. My 90 must be large gear case also @13spline. I wonder what the differance is in the 15spline gear case. I guess I should ask this in the Johnny section. I learn something everday, even @ 55+ years.
