If I end up buying a 16 foot I'll have to either get one of those swivel hitch things, but I don't really feel like paying $150 + for it.

I'm thinking of hacksawing off the length I need, and then buying some angled steel and thru-bolting them to the trailer to connect it all together when I need it. I fugure the steel and bolts will be at least as strong as the hitch coupler is at the end of the trailer.

I'd use like 4 pieces of angle about a foot long, with four bolts through each piece to make sure it's connected well.

Thoughts?

In theory it sounds okay... but why not buy a 12 inch piece of boxed tube that will fit inside or outside of the boxed tongue you just cut. You could have a similar setup to a hitch and receiver bolting the one side on the trailer together and use a locking hitch pin on the end that connects to the ball on your hitch.

I do really prefer a swing away tongue over one that doesn't... It unbelievable how much of a difference a foot and half makes when storing the toys.

What if some kids decide to remove your bolts while you are out on the lake? When you try to move your trailer to load your boat, the trailer comes apart. Better keep some spare bolts handy. I know this sounds crazy but kids with nothing to do will find something to entertain themselves.

I can see all the bolting and unbolting every time you want to use the boat getting old real quick.
