Detent spring question

Putting my LU back together on my '98 25 horse...

How in the heck do I get the detent balls and spring on the prop shaft back into the clutch dog without the "special OMC tool" prescribed in my manual. Is there another way? Also, I presume the balls fit into the groove in the middle of the clutch dog gear, right?

Disregard. A magnetized flat head screwdriver and a little prying did the trick.
