Determine Motor / Sterndrive year.

I've got a 1986 Cheetah 170XP. It has a Mercruiser 140 motor. I'm trying to find out the year of the engine / sterndrive so I can buy some parts to get her ready. I've found four different serial numbers and not much luck in finding the year.

Attached to the motor, I can see
Model - MCM140, Serial - A590456
Drive Unit - A498176
Transom Assembly - A581989

Serial on the sterndrive is 3587263

Also if anyone can link me to a service manual either for download or purchase, not sure what to get since I'm not sure of the year.

How do I determine if this is an Alpha drive and what generation it is.

By these serial numbers it's a 1986.... Manual #6 for the drive and Manual #10 for the engine.

HOWEVER....

Serial on the sterndrive is 3587263

But this serial number the drive is an MC-1, and you would need Manual #1

Also if anyone can link me to a service manual either for download or purchase, not sure what to get since I'm not sure of the year.

Post a photo of the drive. I can tell you what you have by the photo...

Bondo thanks for the link. I've been looking through the mercruiser information while not fully being able to decipher all of it, I am learning.

achris thanks for verifying these things and linking the manuals. They will be of much help as I try to learn more about my boat and how to work on it. I've also verified through the mercruiser information that it is indeed a MC-1, it has the rounded top cover and anti-ventilation plate.
