detonation

I am buying 1991 stingray. The engine is a Merc cruiser, 4.3. I first looked at the boat it had burnt piston.The rest of the boat is in showroom codition. I left deposit and have waited the entire summer for the engine to be rebuilt before taking delivery ( BOUGHT from a marina). They are having difficuty finding the cause of detonation under load, so I am still waiting. They have spent 2 weeks diagnosing. I am wondering if you could offer an answer. I have been GM auto tech for 20 years and have offered my help but they aren't receptive. Have you ran across this before? I would like to be on the river once this year. <br /><br /> Thank you
