I have a 02 DF140 and have just discovered a hole in the drive shaft housing that is due to corrosion. The DF140 has a drive shaft bushing that does not stop water from getting into the drive shaft cavity in the housing (I assume it protects the shaft from any whip). Unfortunately the bushing ends up trapping water above it that causes corrosion as it cant get out. I have read numerous posts about this happening but cant seem to find the best answer. I do not want to replace a $500 housing only to have it happen again. I have considered pulling out the bushing, cleaning and repairing the channel with some marine epoxy but I still won't be able to keep the water from trapping above the bushing and corroding somewhere in that channel.
Any thoughts on my options:
1)Leave the hole so I can flush it out manually? - it has also eaten another hole into the exhaust channel behind it as well
2) Leave out the bushing?
By the way....how can I get the bushing out? Is the rubber that is around the bushing part of the bushing? I am concerned about corossion behind the bushing as well?
Thanks in advance for any thoughts or experience.
