Diaphragm question!!!!!!

i have a 1987 85 hp force 856X7B, i took apart the fuel pump and the diaphragm was all bubbled....my question is when i took it apart right behnd the fuel pump there was a big spring and a little piece of metal in between the two. is this normal i have looked at my clymer book and cant see it in the diagram and i have looked at boats.net and they don't have a spring in their parts diagram either. Is this suppose to be there???????
If i were to reassemble it the diaphragm will not be flat.

That is a fuel pump boost spring.
They added that to later models, and some of the older motors have been upgraded when they have been rebuilt.
I think they started adding them in 1990 or 1991.

Hi Roscoe, doesn't this ruin the diaphragm? do I need this or can I leave it out?
my motor is a 1987.

No it doesn't ruin the diaphram.It helps.It's will stretch it some.J

My SELOC does say that "there are diaphram support discs and springs that are under tension inside the pump assembly be careful not to loose them"

Do you have a picture? I need to change my FP Diaphram and have been looking at SELOC but have not done it yet. Mine is an '87 as well. Did you get the gaskets as well to replace? I guess I waned to make sure i had what I needed before starting... I really should just dive in I guess..

Hey scott, are you asking for a picture of the spring?
if you go to www.boats.net they will show you good diagrams of all the parts but again they don't have the pic of the spring......if you need that only i will take a pic for you.
