Did a decarb...

Couple of questions, I was working on a decarb per the instructions in the FAQ post. First, the reason for doing this was i'm having problems with the engine stalling with the cover on at idle. The idle relief bellow is fine already took it off and inspected and checked the gasket that is near the bottom of the midleg, everything towards the back side of the motor is good and couldn't really check to well the front side(my hands are way too big to slide in there). Replaced the bushing and water pump seals when I changed the impeller out a few weeks ago. I did notice a lot of exhaust coming from up in that area tonight when running it on the decarb mix, it almost looked like some was coming from where the powerhead meets the midleg:confused: Is it normal too see a lot of exhaust to flow from these points in the picture??

Secondly, I ran the decarb mix for about 7-8 minutes(don't want to upset the neighbors too bad:rolleyes:) and let it set for about 7-8 minutes. When I fired it back up I noticed there was no water coming from the tell tale and when I got up there to shut it down the overheat buzzer kicked on. I let it set for a few minutes so it could cool down(oh yeah, I was running it on muffs but there was just as much water flowing as when I run it in a tote of water). Anyways, I filled the tote with water and in to it the lower unit went. Started it back up after cooling down and now the water is flowing better then it ever did before. Instead of sputtering water it actually has a decent stream of water flowing. It seems to be cooling okay since I can lay my hand on the heads with no problem. Surely running the decarb mix didn't do this or did it:confused:

Any advice is welcome or constructive criticism.

Thanks,
Joshua

Since there is no seal on the lower shift rod (yellow arrow) it is possible to see some exhaust venting from there. Some engines did have a seal to prevent this but that went the way of the dinosaurs. Newer Force engine have a divider in the leg that helps prevent this issue.

You should not see exhaust venting from the red arrow. this is a gasket outside of the midleg and no exhausr ever enters the space between the midleg and lower shrouf unless it is coming from somewhere else, like the idle relief bellows.

These engines are NOTORIOUSLY difficult to prime on muffs. The water pump is above the cavitation plate and there is a massive water cavity to fill before it ever gets to the pump. That's why they prime better in a tub of water. The decarb had nothing to do with this issue and probably nothing to do with the exhaust issue either.

Could the exhaust be leaking just below the carbs where the powerhead bolts to the midleg? I was running it as it was getting dark and could see exhaust up in that area when I shined the flashlight up there. I know the idle relief bellow isn't leaking, I took it out inspected everything and even put a light film of gasket maker ooze round the shroud to make sure it sealed good when I put it back together. I will try to get a good video of where i'm seeing the exhaust leak and post on youtube so everyone can see first hand what i'm seeing. I really want to get it ready for memorial weekend so the clock is ticking. If I can't figure it out then the cowl is going to have some 1-1.5 inch holes drilled in it up front where the carbs are and in the back with some mini hood scoops. Might even wire up some small 12V fans and mount in there to draw the exhaust out. Redneck it up real good.
