Did I burn my Johnson 5.5 HP ?

I am a newbie to outboards and I love boating and fishing. I bought an aluminum boat with a Johnson 5.5 HP outboard, I got it to start but it smoked a lot and I couldn't keep the idle, I tried adjusting the top and bottom knobs (Lean and Rich) and all of the sudden fire came out of the engine and stopped. Did I burn the motor? what can I do? I would really appreciate your help and guiding me on this issue.

You need to start with basic checks, compression, spark, fuel delivery. Has the engine be sitting for a period of time? If so you will probably need to overhaul carb. The smoke is from the oil/fuel mix. You did not say what model you have, but you should mix fresh gas with proper oil ratio.
