Did I cause the problem myself?

If I over trimmed the lower unit, could the drive shaft assy cause damage to the bellows? The reason I ask is that when running boat at WOT, I can only get about 3800 rpms using the trim switch. I used the trailer switch to get up to 4100 rpms. Now I have a constant leak coming from what I believe to be the drive unit in the transom. Thank goodness I have an auto bilge pump.
If overtrimming caused my leak, is that why trim sending units are set to avoid this issue?

Overtrimming does not damage bellows.

Limits switched are there to keep you from ventilating the drive and over-revving your engine.

when was the last time the outdrive bellows was changed? probably either the driveshaft bellows or the lower shift cable bellows finally gave way.

I used the trailer switch to get up to 4100 rpms.

The question is WHY ? You very well know those buttons are seperate for a reason !
If you want to change RPMS (for whatever reason), get a different prop. Problem solved.
