well as you may know ive been having a long time battle with a 1961 mercury 500. what a beast.

i just been decarbing it yesterday and today.

so this is my procedure for yesterday i want you to see if im decarbing the engine the right way?

i put seafoam in gas about 1-2 gallons of gas. then start engine warm up. shut down. take 1,2,4 plugs out and spray deep creep all around the cylinder. put plugs in then let sit 1-2 hours. restart run engine and i spray rest of can in carbs equally.

today i bought another can of deep creep. still using the gas from yesterday. start engine. warm up. engine off. spray in in 1,2,4 cylinder then sit 15-20 min. repeat for about 4-5 times. then one last warm up shut down and spray in cylinder 1,2,4 now i typing this up and letting it sit overnight.

the reason why i cant do number 3 cylinder is because i had to put a heli-coil in.( omg stupid stupid stupid stupid)!! so the heli coil might come out of take plug out too. i tried to take it out but i kinda felt the coil coming with the plug so i retightened. is the number 3 cylinder really going to matter i dont decarb? before i restored the motor the engine had 128-135 psi in all cylinder so 7 psi difference.

ill be getting a new impeller for the motor since i screwed the other one up. i didnt overheat it!!!

any suggestions on idle? i will try to purchase a impeller from iboats.com and am going to get a tiny-tach commercial

Re: did i do it right?

I'd do whatever it takes to get that heli coil thread to stay in place. Wind the plug out, even the heli coil comes out with it, de-grease and clean the plug hole (brake cleaner or something) and loc-tite a new heli coil back in there. Hopefully that will be enough to make it stay in place so you can change plugs without any issues.

I havent done this myself, but if i was in your situation that's probably what I'd try.

Re: did i do it right?

Take that plug on #3 out if heli coil comes with it thats great, DO NOT REUSE that heli coil gets new one put the super hard loctite on it use the heli coil tool install new heli coil and lets the loctite set up 24 hrs before putting new plug back in ive had to do this with many aluminum racing heads 1 more thing always put anti sieze on threads of plugs to keep them from hanging up in plug holes and you will be good to go;)

Re: did i do it right?

No wonder ya don't like Mercs!

Ya need ta sell that white girl once ya get her runnin' n' look fer a fresh water Black virgin 1968 or newer 500, (trigger fired CDI), with even cornpression that runs real good ta start with.

Up here in God's Country you could find one fer $200-500 depending on yer negotiating skills.

'Course engines up here in God's Country don't run year 'round like they do in FL, so it is easy ta find a low hour real sweet virgin Black girl that will run fer the next 40 years. Does FL even have any "fresh" water???? Kinda brackish even if the stuff ain't salty eh???? LOL

If ya start with a good runnin' Black Merc with the right Thunderbolt ignition that runs real sweet yo'll never look back at those slow ugly Johnnyrudes! LOL! jk

"Once Black ya never go back". :D:D:D

Merry Christmas n' good luck on that ol' white girl. JR

Re: did i do it right?

you cant reuse heli coils? ugh more money down the drain. i barely turned it maybe 1/16 out. then put it right back in tightened it? do i still have to replace it?

so anything i can get from napa? i got the kit for the heli coil from napa but it only came with one heli coil the size i wanted. so i need to get anit-seize, locktite and new heli-coil and i forgot the size.

i did put loktite that came with the package on the new heli coil before i put it in and let it sit for a day.

Re: did i do it right?

You should be able to buy just the helicoil inserts , They may have to be ordered . Just bring the plug with you and the store will order the correct pack of inserts . I always use red locktite for helicoil installation and never had one back out if it was done correctly . Also I am not sure what kit you bought , Helicoil makes a kit just for spark plugs , Make sure this is the one you are using !

I have, (soon ta be had), a VERY SWEET 1969 Merc 1000 low hour fresh water virgin short shaft that idles sweet n' smooth, n' when ya hit the coal ya better be hangin' on!!!

(If ya had her yo'wd never bad mouth Mercs again!!!!) :D

It is on a vintage 18' "Sabrecraft" a solid hull built here in the NW that has a great reputation.

I've had it fer 13 years now and me kids, (all older then you now as young adults), put a ten foot pilon in the boat, (actually ten feet tall  ), fer water boardin'. (I don't water board mesself.) They also have bladders they fill with water ta add weight, (unless they have a bunch of friends ta pack along ;) ), as the wake prior ta addin' weight is only an inch high or so. (I hate big wakes! )

I'm givin' this boat to me oldest daughter fer Xmas this year, (she will be thrilled), n' me younger daughter is gettin a "Bayhole" with a sweet 950 on it. Then all three on me kids will have fast vintage boats with tall Black sweet runnin' girls fer power. (Me son already has a "Fiberform" with a 1150 on it), he gets a .22 rifle this year.

Sorry fer the thread hyjack. JR

Re: did i do it right?

i just got my impeller in the mail today:D it was very good. packaged with paper but it's just a impeller. i ordered the cheapest shipping which was 13 days but it came in 2-3! but i guess thats more to the shipper.

2moro after church i surely will be installing the impeller. and more great news the cover came off very easy and so did the impeller. plus i didnt lose the pin!
