1997 force 120 and 97 25' party barge...reverse gear went out so had a mechanic replace the whole gear set in my lower unit because forward was slightly stripped as well and also went ahead and had throttle and shift cables replaced because thats why reverse was stripped in the first place from not going all the way in reverse...also had the cork gasket on the bowl of one of my carbs replaced due to leak, boat ran and idled fine before hand by the way, now i went to put it in the water and it was smoking bad and not idling well so i was revving it high in neutral to clean her out (by having button pushed in on controls) all of a sudden grinding and motor stops...prop is locked in all gears...mechanic looked at again and said i exploded the clutch dog...also said that i did this by revving too high and putting it in gear...i never had it in gear...i had the high idle button pushed in the whole time...also now gas is pouring out the exhaust...so when he replaced the gasket obviosuly something happened with the carb cuz it ran fine and never smoked and idled good before he put the gasket on...i dont want to pay again for a clutch when its suppose to be warrantied for 30 days but he saying its my fault? if it is my fault then fine.....but i never put in gear...was a cable out of adjustment? and why the leaking out the the exhaust when it was fine before the gasket replacement??

Sounds like he screwup somehow,IF you never tried to put it in gear.
Reving it up and jammin it into gear will hurt.
If YOU REALLLY think your in the right go back to him.
Explain what you think and then go to the BBB.
If he's a member he should do something????
Then go to the court.

Have him show you the clutch dog...if its not in pieces or ramps broken off, he's full of it. You can rev the engine till it blows but it will never effect the clutch dog as its in neutral and has no load on it. If the dog is busted or damaged its your word against his on how damage occurred. Usually a high rpm drop in gear will put a slight twist in the pinion or crank splines on driveshaft.
