I just boat a J16 Carolina Skiff with a 25hp Suzuki Tiller motor. The dealer who sold me my boat said that the prop size that came with the motor can sometimes over rev the engine if there is not enough weight in the boat and that I might have to re-prop the motor to get better results. Well, I finally took the boat out this past weekend and it would over rev at ? throttle. The prop size is 10.25 x 10.
This was very frustrating because I?m trying to break the motor in and at ? throttle I have already over revved the motor. I did the 5 min idle, then the 15 min low speed and then was trying to just run it at different speeds up to 1/2 throttle or so. The Suzuki manual says to keep it under ? throttle for like 1 hr 45 min or (3000rpms), but since I do not have a tach ? throttle turned out to be 6000rpms +!
The reason I knew that I over revved is that my motor has a rev limiter and it kicked in while running. My motor also has a warning light that comes on just before the limiter kicks in. The limiter only kicked in once, this was because I saw the light and stopped before it had a chance to activate (there is a 10 second delay).
Sorry for the long post, but this is my first brand new motor (always have used old 2 strokes) and I am worried I may have hurt the motor during the break in period. Anyone have any reassuring words that my motor is OK or have I really messed up?
Thanks for the help!
