been doing a bellows job on my bayliner 2050, alpha one gen 2, changed the gear lube in it while i was waiting on tool to install the new shift cable. I bumped the propeller a little bit and noticed it spun freely??? uh oh I had the boat in forward when i removed the drive, why isnt it in forward now? Shift lever on the drive at the exhaust port is pointing straight back( i believe this is to be forward?), why isnt the prop locked? I know it was working correctly when I took it off the boat. So is this thing going to install correctly (not sure how im going to turn the drive shaft if prop spins freely). Please help me on what I should do to make sure this is put back correctly.

Re: did i make a mistake?

The Alpha1 shift shaft does not lock into position inside the drive. Apparently you properly had it in FWD when you removed the drive, then bumped the prop which took it out of FWD. This is totally normal. All you have to do is rotate the shift shaft on the drive to the straight FWD position while rotating the prop CCW and you will feel the prop "locK" as the shift shaft is placed in FWD. Then you have to hold the prop in the CCW direction with a bungie cord and you are all set for drive re-install. You only have to do this when you are ready to re-install the drive. If you need to rotate the prop/drive shaft to line up the splines, you only need to rotate very little, and only CCW so you keep it in FWD. HTH!.

Good info here...If you turn the prop CCW in forward aren't you turning the water impeller backwards which is a no-no ???

It can take it as long as you dont turn it very much(which you shouldnt have to...not more than a "bump CCW on the prop to get the splines lined up).. all you need to do is turn it enough to line up the splines, which would be less that the width of one of the splines. It can handle it.
