Did i mess up my Engine? Ford omc

My buddy and i took out his Bayliner yesterday to test it out on the water. He forgot to winterized it this pasted winter. We were cruising for a about 10 minutes when the engine lost power. We took the engine cover out and found out there was Engine oil at the bottom of the engine. Somehow it leaked from the oil cover on top of the engine. We lost about 3 quarts oil. Since its a 4 cylinder we only had 1 quart of oil to get back to the boat launch. The engine was knocking bad on the way to the launch. He has a 2.3 L. 4 Cylinder Ford omc engine. How much will this cost him to fix it?

Events like this make the little hairs on the back of my neck stand straight out. The oil pressure gauge was probably telling you there was an issue long before the knocking started. But since you asked about the cost, probably in $2500 - $3000 range depending on the approach to the repair. New engine, rebuild the existing if rebuildable, how much work is done by the owner, etc.

Yet another example of why we say, engines don't usually wear out. Their owners kill them. Yes -- I know that's no consolation.

The repair will probably cost more than the boat is worth. His bad memory will bite him hard in the wallet, if he decides to fix it.

If the engine is not seized a compression test tool is 50 bucks at sears. I think 130 lbs of compression or more is runable. But I'd hope for 145+

You blew 3 quarts of oil out the valve cover because your block is cracked.

Who cares about the oil pressure. You needed a new block before you left home.
