I drained my oil in lower unit and refilled. Well.......when it came out the top vent hole i put vent plug in. I decided to give it a few more squirts to see if it would pump in or not. The oil started coming out of my prop shaft seal. Is this gonna be a problem? Should i change that seal now? Could it have come out some other seals too? Sometimes i wonder what the heck was i thinking. Thanks for your input. Dont be to hard on me for being a D-*****.

Curiosity killed the cat!! lol....Not sure how much pressure you applied, but once you closed the vent its air tight and only one place to escape is via the seals.I would let out a little fluid 30cc or 1 fluid ounce due to expansion, clean up prop area and take it for a run then re check. If no leaks and no water in lower end,id say your good.

I thought it would of been air tight as well and wouldnt really allow me to pump anymore in. It pumped in almost as easy as if the vent plug wasnt in. This all came to be because i went to change fluild the other day and had app. 1/2 cup water that came out first. Was told it very well could be my vent/drain plug seals. I got new ones and will run it tomorrow. If more water then i guess ill have to change all seals in lower unit. Thing is only 4 yrs old. :/

I think maximum test pressure is 5 psi. The oil found the weakest point of exit. Follow Aussieflash's advice.

Are the seals installed back to back in a Merc or are both lips facing out ??

You didn't damage your seals!!! What color was the oil you drained out? do you leave your boat in the water all the time? You have to see where the oil leaked out and fix it, Seals don't leak that much unless they are shot!!!

Re: Did I screw up filling lower unit??

The oil I drained out was pretty normal color as all the water settled to the bottom of unit app. 1/2 cup. I checked it at first of season and all was good. Had boat out app. five times and rechecked and found water. Not in the lake all the time just when i fish. Pumped oil in with the little pump that screws on to oil qt. Thanks so much for all the insight
