I have a 90 evinrude 1998 my mechanic says the block is cracked, Just wondering if this happens alot or just my luck. I used the best oil, let her warm up, all the norm.
Is there one thing that would crack the block.

Thanks motorless:confused:

Re: Did you ever

There are various causes that would result in a cracked block (crankcase). Give us the story about what happened..... you were running along fine at one point, then what happened?

Re: Did you ever

Well it started with a slight hesitation in the summer, it only did it when i was full throttle only a couple of times. Then it seemed ok on some trips. In the fall it got worse at full throttle it would hesitate like I was out of gas. Then it would run fine after the hesitation. My last run I had a hard time getting her started which usually is two tuns of the key. Then I took her too get looked at.

Thanks

Re: Did you ever

It probably isn't truly "cracked" like a cast iron block will do. Nevertheless, it may have a serious problem like a "corroded through" one. So, the guy didn't explain??

Next time have your wife or GF take it in. Women will demand an explaination. Us guys' ego won't let us admit we have no idea what the mechanic is talking about, so we just say oh, well ok.

Re: Did you ever

The last time you ran the engine, did it make any kind of loud noise?

Usually a fouled carburetor will result in having at least one cylinder run lean. This could have resulted in a connecting rod bearing becoming overheated to a point whereas the connecting rod to crankshaft bearing would fail which would lead to having the connecting rod slam against the inner portion of the crankcase (block), cracking it somewhat.

Bottom line is that we would need more information as to what went on and a better description of what that mechanic had to say. He should know where the crack is and a general idea as to what caused it.
