Dies when shifter to forward

Hi all so I have an 89 Bayliner capri it's a 4 cylinder force L drive it runs perfect in neutral and in reverse but dies when shifting into forward. Wondering where to start. My grandpa has always had boats and said there's a system that shuts some cylinders down when going into gear and I should look into adjusting that

?---Is this switch for going into to gear or getting the motor out of gear ?----Any trouble shooting done on this motor ?

I have no idea about the switch that's all he said. I decarboned the motor a few days ago and cleaned the carbs really well. It runs like a top in neutral but when I go to drop it in gear it just bogs and dies in a half a second

usually that means your idle needs turned up a little - it's the screw at the bottom of the tower with the nut behind it that locks it from moving - try turning it right 1/2 turn then lock the nut and see if that help? Should be around 900-1000 in neutral and about 700-800 in gear.

I don't think the neautral switch will stop the engine - it should only keep it from starting.

I had my cousin hold the gas a little while dropping into gear and even once in gear he could floor it and itd just big and die this was all while out on the lake a couple weeks ago I was able to put back to the dock in reverse tho so that was nice. If I start the boat in my driveway while hooked to the hose can I oup it in gear?

Your grandpa was wrong about the dropping cyl.
That works on some different motors, not on Forces.

The idle on the hose 1100-1200 in gear in the water 800

Check the compression and spark on each cyl.
Check the wiring harness, especially the trigger leads.

Sorry for the possible dumb question but what is the trigger leads? Also I thing the hand controls a little messed up cause some times it won't engage the neutral switch and then sometimes I can start it in gear

Under the flywheel, the top of towershaft connects to the trigger.
It has a bunch of very thin wires that break at the connection bar.
The ends have heat shrink on the ends, the wire breaks under the shrink and can break contact when moved.
