Lack of refining capacity (There hasn't been a refinery built in the US since the 1970s due to the environmentalists, the NIMBY crowd and over regulation<br /><br />3. States further complicate things by each requiring specific grades due to their own particular environmental regs<br /><br />4. Several refineries are off line<br /><br />5. Rampant speculation of futures (a bubble) do to uncertainty in the ME, capacity issues in the US, and overall increasing world demand<br /><br />However, I saw an analysis that showed, on an inflation adjusted basis, we are still paying less for fuel today (at $2.50) than we were in 1981
