diff between Merc and Mariner

Are there differences? If so, are they important diffeences? What are they?

After assembly the engines are test run, the most powerfull ones get painted black, the others are painted gray.<br /><br />Just kidding. Mariner was a joint venture between Brunswick and yamaha and in the early years a lot of the motors were in fact Yammies. During the 80s the line evolved until it and Mercury were the same except for colour

and merc and mariner , as stated above, were identical, the same as johnson and evinrude or tohatsu and nissan... mariners are no longer sold in north america

I've got a '97 Mariner and it's identical to Merc. down to every last nut and bolt. All tags, filters, and manuals have the Merc name and part #'s. Nothin' but a sticker (my Mariner sticker is way cooler than the Merc though!! ).

Merc-V-Mariner:<br /> I had always thought that the Mariner engines were saltwater variations of the Mercs- stainless hardware in the critical areas. Is that just a rumor or is that correct? I always see a lot of Mariners on the East Coast so I thought that was probably correct. <br /><br />Not 100% certain on this.<br /><br />UFM82

No differences except for how they were marketed. Mercury was the performance line, while Mariner was promoted as the durable line. But except fo the early models, which were Yamahas, there wasn't any difference except the paint, and occasionally the top hp model was missing from the Mariner line
