Hi. I've been searching this forum extensively in attempt to better understand this subject. Is it safe to assume that the Johnson 110hp and 115hp cross-flow use the same powerhead, but get difference in horsepower perhaps through carbeuration, exhaust and ignition? If this were true, why does the 115hp require a different service manual than the 110hp for a given year? Are there differences between these outboards for other systems like ignition and gear box?

Also, were there any changes made in these models between 1986 and 1989? I believe they went from twin power packs to a single. Is there anything else?

Finally, can anyone point me to web sites that may talk about all the post 1970 omc engines and how they differed?

I hope this isn't too much to ask for one post. Thanks for your help and patience. :)

Best Regards,
Dennis

That's a hard question to answer. as for going back to 1970. OMC has made many change's in their engines. Ignition, porting, pistons, crank, rod's, you name it! As for how they rate horse power, such as a 110 versus 115, I simply don't know!

I too have often wondered. Also I never understood why they never designated a horsepower rating for the 1.6 litre seadrive. I get tired of parts men laughing and saying that they no longer cary parts for that engine so I just tell them it is a 89 110hp Johnson and they always have parts. I've never got one that didn't fit.

Mike, that's interesting you mention the 1989 1.6L sea drive. I happen to have, what I believe to be, a 1989 1.6L sea drive powerhead in a 1986 1.6 seadrive outboard.

The powerhead is suspicious because it has a model stamp on starboard side of the engine block that says J130tx-ce. I know that's not a seadrive type model number, but the stamp sure looks like a factory stamp, just not in the usual place like the welsh plug. Some OMC enthusiasts have told me a theory that the 130hp is the 110 or 115 powerhead that has been "souped up" with a bigger carb and exhaust changes.

One other strange thing is that my outboard does not have the big, massive jack-plate style mounting bracket. It's a standard mounting bracket for use in a transom cutout with a 25" shaft. Is that unusual or are they easy to change over?

Mike, does your seadrive have a single or twin power packs?

Thanks for any info you can offer.
Dennis

As for the horsepower rating of the seadrives, here is something someone posted on the rec.boats newsgroups on the subject:

I found Sea Drive HP listings in of all places a NGK spark plug chart for Johnson/Evinrude outboards. This is from memory:

1.6L V4 cross-flow 115
1.8L V4 looper 140
2.0L V4 looper 140
2.5L V6 cross-flow 190
2.6L V6 cross-flow 190
2.7L V6 looper 225
3.0L V6 looper 225
3.6L V8 looper 275
4.0L ? ? 300

Notice how NGK put 115hp rather than 110hp for the 1.6L?
