Hello i am wondering what the differences are between a marine engine and a crate engine designed for a car? What would i have to do to take a crate engine and make it safe to go into my boat?

the basic block starts out the same at g.m. or ford
they then go to a different assembly line where they recieve "marine components" could be cams valves etc.
also core plugs are different so they don't rust

they are different because they are designed for sustained high rpm where a automotive engine only turns 2-3000 constantly

From a safety perspective - it's all about avoiding onboard fires & explosions. Unlike a car, a boat doesn't have an open area for fumes to harmlessly dissipate. Electrics are designed to sheild against an external spark and fuel pumps are designed to harmlessly redirect fuel leaks. Fuel lines are rust resistant, anything that can melt (plastic fuel filters) not used, waterpump bearings and seals are designed for salt use - the list goes on.

Aldo

if u are talking about the basic engine.. and start with a truck engine with high bottom end torque.. probably only the water pump and core plugs.. both would be more corrosion resistant.. safety is more about the bits that fit on the engine than the actual block and head..

bondo seems the expert on this sort of thing..

trog100

And I Think You've read Every 1 of My posts...........
'Cause,... That's about what I'd say............

And,.. The Waterpump, Could be Optional,.. Depending on Which Bits,+ Pc.s you Used............... :D

I just finished tearing down a 95 Mercruiser 260 HP, and there is nothing insidebut stock components. Stock rods, 4 valve relief pistons, stock lifters, stock heads, and stock crank.

I have read all the B/S over the years about special parts, cast crank, 4 bolt main, etc.,etc.
Iam guessing over 35 I have opened up, to see if there is any thing special and it's not there.

Iam 100% with Bondo, brass plugs, a little better than stock cam, and that is it.

What would it take for me to buy a crate motor that is making 350hp and 386 ft lbs of torque and make itable to go into my boat and have it be safe and functional

an 8.1L crate motor will work. stay away from high lif/long duration cams. check the cam specs for the PCM sea-max 325HP 5.7. what drive are you gonna put this in front of ?
some place on this site is a list of GM marine crate motors and their respective HP ratings.
