I'm looking to replace a lower unit/complete outdrive on my Searay with a 7.4 MPI that comes stock with a 2.20R. I need to know what difference there is if any between the gear ratios as well as if I can swap just lower units from a 1.81, 2.20, or 2.21 without any issues.

Have not heard of a R in a Bravo drive. Seeing it with Alpha is understandable because things change to run in reverse. If its stamped then might indicate its been repaired. There has a R version on Black hawk drives

Almost {not almost) any Bravo lower and upper can be swapped on one another. Even the Standard, X, XR, XZ can all swap with any lower. The almost is after 1993, but if I was going to use one I would look for after 2000

Have not seen a 2:21 and my guess is its really a 2:20 or the person that has it doesn't know. Changing to a 1:81 would require a porp change

I bought a 2.00 Bravo 3X and a 2.00 Bravo 3 as a package, specs showed online that the lowers on the 1.81, 2.00, and 2.20 are the same and I can swap them out. I'm keeping the same upper on mine, I am looking to swap just the lowers. However if I can just swap the complete drive to a 2.00 Bravo 3 with the 7.4 Mercruiser MPI I will do just that if there is not any difference. I'm just concerned with the operating functionality of the 2.00 versus the 2.20 that I have and whether or not it would change anything. My Searay Cruiser is a 2001.

Agree the lowers are the same so changing them will keep the ratio of what you have. The difference between the standard and X is the hardened gears in the upper, there is no difference in the lower

So the real question is -if you swapped from a 2.20 to a 2.00 ratio drive would you be ok? No - you would need to drop down in prop pitch (assuming it was properly pitched) to stay at the same WOT rpm.

If it was working ok I would keep your 2.20 upper and swap lowers.

Good deal, exactly what my question was. My drive is solid, corrosion took a toll on the lower unit. Rest of the drive and transom assembly is solid.

Good to know, that is what I will do then. Thanks!

Common issue on bravo 3 especially the earlier ones. Make sure your mercathode is working, you have the proper annodes. If slip kept stray current from other boats can be an issue as well.
friend of mine added a second mercathode with two pucks on the transom after corrosion ate his lower housing
