The question came up on another site about why the difference between 2 or 3 persons. Being forty or so years since I was involved on the administrative end of such things I had no idea. I tried to bluff my way through it and told them metric people are heavier but they saw through it.cdn capacity.jpg

Hey, a kilo is 2.2 pounds, right? So does that mean 2.2 US persons equals 1 Canadian?

My guess

The US uses 185# (since 12-01-2011). That number used to be 160.

The average person weighs much more

The formula for US capacity still uses 150#/person in its (Length x width) / 15

I believe the rest of the world uses 80kg and does not "round up" with outdated formula

How do airline pilots determine total " passenger load " before roaring away.
The dispatchers figure it out along with needed fuel, etc, using a standard weight per person. I did read once that there are times they have to calculate more like for a charter of a pro football team. Dispatchers do all the planning for a flight, All an airline pilot has to do is fly the airplane. I remember reading 30 or so years ago the standard weight per person was jumped from 150.

My parents flee down to Florida a few years ago. There were 5 passengers on the flight plus crew. They were told to sit in their ticketed seats for takeoff and landing but could move to any seat they wanted while in flight. This more or less explains that. I kind of figured it was for ease of calculation but never thought to ask anyone.

I flew on a puddle jumper about 15 years ago where you walked on the tarmac and they asked you your weight as you got on so they could assign seats. the couple in front of me were pushing 350 each. yet told the steward 200. I said out loud. based on their reported weight vs actual, my weight is 500# to get your calculation right. make sure they sit over the wings

The pilot said we got this...... while laughing hysterically.

It will bankrupt the airlines if they had to have a simple electronic scale. Just inside the entrance door.
Can not help greedy and stupid companies.
They rather carry useless tons of fuel during every flight.
