I was curious to the differences between the v4 Evinrudes. From the research I have done the powerheads are all the same. It seems the carbs are the difference. If this is true would I be able to take the carbs and intake from a 140 and put them on my '89 110 and make a 140 or is there more to it than this?

Hard to tell exactly what comparison you are wanting to make. The 110 engine in 89 is a crossflow engine. An 89 140 is a big bore looper, completely different engine. If you are comparing your crossflow with the older 140 crossflows from the early 80's, keep in mind that a main difference is the hp rating systems which changed about the 86 timeframe. A pre 86 (or maybe 85) engine was crankshaft hp rated. The later engines are all propshaft rated. That's a 8-9% adjustment (downward )for the friction of the gearcase on the later year models. Your 89 110 is very similar to the 140 crossflows. Yours has the large carbs on it. The main difference from those early engines is that your engine has low compression bathtub heads and does not have the rubber intake filler blocks (322684), which are good for 3-5 hp. Your ignition power pack limits rpm's to 5800, while the older engines ran unlimited factory packs.

There are soooo many variations of the V-4's dating back to 1958 If you're replacing parts, it is best to stay as close to your model year and horsepower as possible.

So would I be able to swap heads for more compression? Im at 100psi +- 2psi on each cylinder. Im just looking for a little more power without having to swap motors but a 150hp would be nice if the right deal were to be found

Re: difference between v4 Evinrudes.

My guru mechanic told me he could make my '81 90 a 115 with a carb swap but that more major (and not entirely feasible) modifications were necessary to make it a 140.

This conversion came about because he was troubleshooting some running issues I was having and came to find out that some dopey previous owner of my motor slapped a set of 140 carbs on it. Fortunately he was able to re-jet them properly and my motor now runs awesome. Whether or not I'm pulling a few more than 90 horses now, who knows ;)

I've heard about the carb swap but I believe I already have the bigger carbs. I wll probably wait and see what happens after removing the waterlogged foam and if I'm not happy look for a 150 unless someone comes along who has a feasible solution. It seems a guy has to throw alot f money at a motor for a few extra horses and it's not always worth it in the end.

73 135 head.jpghead damage.jpgSome of the bathtub heads started appearing in 81, but by 83 they were pretty much all low compression heads. The first head is a 135 head and is typical of a high compression head. I've attached a picture of a (damaged) low compression head. They pretty much look like a bowl.

If you want more HP, get a bigger motor.
It can be done but from what I have read out here of the issues folk have had while trying to do it makes it not worth the risk or the hassle to me.
Just my 2 cents though

I think thats the way I will end up going. I think a 150 would put me where I want to be. Looking for a little more giddy-up for tubing and skiing.

A 140 crossflow can't hold a candle to the torque from the cubic inches of a 150 crossflow.

Don't tell me this. My hull is rated for 150. My current dream motor is a post '85 140 because of the weight, fuel, and complexity savings. Don't complicate my dream! :D

The '85 140 is NOT a crossflow and is WAY more motor than a 140 crossflow. I owned one for 25 years.
