Would be practical if different brand outboards had the same mounting patterns so wouldn't need to drill new holes into the transom when swapping motors.
Question: Does a 1988 115hp 4cyl. 20" shaft Suzuki have the same pattern for mounting as the 1979 V4 Johnson with 20" shaft?

Most motors made from the late 1970s on have the BIA bolt pattern. As for your question - yes, they both share the same bolt pattern.

the standard transom mounting bolt pattern used today for all larger outboards was first used with Johnson and Evinrude's 75hp V-4 from 1960.

I know first hand that Force (pre mercury buy out) are not the same as others. I'm installing a jack plate for my 88 force 125hp and the mounting pattern is not the BIA standard.

The 88 suzuki 115 backet lined up perfectly with the 79 johnson V4.
