The differential housing on my riding lawn mower is covered with oily sand. It's got to be leaking. How did this happen? What should I do? The mower makes a whining sound similar to an electric golf cart.

any ideas

Thank you

Re: Differential leaking fluid

It depends on several things. If the mower is an older one I would clean off the area and try and see where the leak is coming from first . May be a bolt that needs to be tightened . I would also see where I could add some more gear oil and then place some card board under it to see how bad its dripping. Its it just a few drops every several days fill it and continue to use it. Spending any real money on it may be a waste.

You also may want to see if there is a vent on the diff, if its clogged it will over preasure and cause a leak.

Re: Differential leaking fluid

What brand mower is it?

Is it a Hydrostatic or gear transmission. Many of the newer IZT Hydro transmissions will also leak if improper hydro oil is used.

I have over 8 years in the business, I'd be happy to help you.
