All are designed to prevent fuel from being dumped into the bilge. Carbs must be designed so no fuel seeps out of the carb via the throttle shafts. Float bowl vents also have direct spillage away from the bilge Mechanical fuel pumps will catch any fuel that gets thru a leaky diaphram and send to the carb instead of letting it drip into the bilge. Same thing with starters, altnators, and distributors, all are designed to prevent any gas fumes from getting inside or sparks from getting inside. Using auto parts in a boat is unsafe and againt USCG rules, in other words Illegal.

Re: differnce between boat and auto parts

I came across an interesting one the other day, the spark plugs have a M in front of the # which refers to marine. The only thing I could think of is that they put some kind of coating on the outside to prevent corrosion.

Definitely a big hole in the water that you pour money into.

My other favorite: The two happiest days of a boaters life, the day he buys it and the day he sells it.
