I just bought this boat from a used boat dealer. I took the boat out twice, the problem occur on the second trip. My Johnson won't start until I open the cover, and press & hold down the choke lever while having someone start the ignition. Once it run, puff of white smoke came out for about 30 sec. Any suggestion or comment is fully appreciated.

Is the choke working when you turn the ignition on and push the key in?

Hey Wahoo,
Maybe the powerhead to adaptor gasket is blown. the exaust that accumulates insides the cover will starve the engine of oxygen, but I don't see why it only happens at start up,could be that the choke solenoid isn't closing the choke plates all the way,if that's the problem adjust the solenoid position to correct this.
Just a thought

His engine doesn't have choke plates. It has the little pump that injects the gas behind the carbs into the intake. It does sound like you have a leak somewhere. Crank the engine on the water hose and get some fogging oil in a spray can. While the engine is running spray the fogging oil on the power head where the two halves come together, where the intake bolts on, where the carbs bolt on, where the powerhead bolts on and anywhere else there could possibly be a leak. If the idle speed changes any while you are spraying then that is where your leak is.
