I hope someone can help me with this problem-

I have a 1987 Bayliner Capri with an OMC 3.0 liter and cobra outdrive.

When the motor is not running the throttle/gear selecter will move easily from reverse to neutral to forward. When the engine is running, however, it is very difficult to move the selecter from neutral to reverse or forward. I have to smack it to get it into gear. There is no noise or grinding/clunking, just a lot of effort.
I have removed the cables from the carb and outdrive at the engine and found them to move freely- so I don't suspect theat the cables are binding.
I'll also add that this boat and drive unit have very low hours (less then 100) and are in VERY good shape. The boat went unused for quite some time, but I used it all last year with no problems. The engine runs excellent.
Any ideas?

HAVE YOU CHECKED THE SHIFT INTRUPT SWITCH ? IS IT WORKING PROPERLY ? IF IT WORKS WHEN MOTOR IS NOT RUNNING LIKE IT SHOULD THEN THE SWITCH IS ABOUT THE ONLY THING THAT I CAN THINK OF THAT WOULD CAUSE IT TO BE ANY DIFFERENT WHEN RUNNING. ALSO WHAT RPM DOE'S THE MOTOR IDLE AT ? IT MAY BE IDLED TO HIGH. BUT THE SWITCH SHOULD DTILL TAKE CARE OF THAT TOO IF IT IS WORKING PROPERLY.

u may not need new cables. there was a recall by omc on thee cables in the late 80's. the previous owner was proably notified. the cable could just need an adjustment. there is a website which addresses this problem. when i find the address ill post it. by the way the new cables have a red jacket. if yours are red then the previous owner probably participated in the recall. these cables must be adjusted properly or u run the risk of wrecking your gearcase.

The color of the throttle and shift cables will make no difference. Red was Morse and black was Teleflex. Both work equaly well. There was a re-call on the shift cable assembly that goes into the lower unit.

Had the same problem. If the cables move freeley with motor off and hooked up. I think it is the interrupter switch.
