I just got this one in today. It's used at a coal prep plant so the crews can run around the ponds without having to worry about water pumps and stuff.

The engine is a Briggs&Straton 16hp 4 stroke. The rig was made in Louisiana and is called a Go-Devil.

Those are cool...even cooler is the version with TWO briggs V-twin's hooked crankshaft to crankshaft. :D

That's the one roscoe. Vanguard engine. The ones I saw overseas had small V6's. I'd like to try this sucker out. :D

OBJ,

I've used a 5 horse version of of one of those quite a bit.

They are real quirky to operate and it takes some real getting used to.

Whatever arm you use to operate it will become twice as big as the other one.

I see alot of them around here. Real popular on the Horicon marsh. I never operated one, but they remind me of a Bond film (can't remember which one).

Re: Dig This Outboard!

lmao at DJ! so is it similar to running a 1man gas eng post hole digger in a gravel pit? :D it seems that holding that prop underwater would be like holding a pitbull in a mudpuddle...

thats a cool job tho OBJ ;) maybe you can invent a sliding weight on the frame going out to the prop, and make megabux

I've seen a number of these motors and they are still being produced.they are used heavily in the southern swamps.the main idea behind this motor isnt to not needing a water pump.they are designed to be used on shallow draft boats to have the abillity to run in very shallow water.most outboards wont runin the same depth that a go devil will because the prop will be out of the water wit as much trim as is needed.good little motors.would like to have one for a jon boat.

Re: Dig This Outboard!

These guys that use this run on ponds that have a lot of abrasive scum floating on and in the water. You should see some of the water pumps on there outboards I've rebuilt...WHOA!! Cups are near competely gone. Impellers, whats left, ain't nothin' but nubs.

I can see where using this rig would build arm muscle. Still like to mess with it on the water....if and when ever the ice leaves. 3" of snow on the ground and more coming. :(

My experience with these things has proven that if the boat will float, they'll go. Not so well in gravel bottoms though.

Certain types of weeds will still "ball up" on the prop. If that happens-HOLD ON! It's like trying to stop a washing machine, on spin cycle, with a bowling ball inside. Don't even ask about how I remembered that analogy. :D

One cool thing though. If the weeds do ball up on it, all you have to do is shut it off, spin it around and your buddy sitting in the FRONT of the boat has to deal with the mess! :D

Then again, if your buddy in the front starts razzing you about that 2" perch you caught... :p

Re: Dig This Outboard!

hehehehe you guys are something. I live in baton rouge where the go devil boats are made. a guy named Warren Coco owns the place and these boats are superb at going through the marsh. we duck hunt from a rig that he made, and this is the best stump jumper made. we have the 17 foot long boat with a 20hp briggs motor.and the boat has a teflon coating on the bottom to make it easier to go over stumps and logs, and it slides through the shallows with only 4 inches of water. where we duck hunt you simply cannot go there without one. here is his web site and it gives a complete history and what he sells.

http://www.godevil.com/The_Company.html

good luck guys. man is it hot down here today 76 degrees!!!! just got back from fishing at the coast and limited out on reds and 20 nice specs!!!!! heheh wanna see how good the fishing is down here just goto

www.rodnreel.com

Best fishing in the world and never need to store boat all winter .

rjarreau,

I lived in Louisiana fo almost five years. I duck hunted south of Lake Charles, many a time.

I was fascinated by the old; "mud boats".

For you "dry landers", that's a flat bottom boat, inboard-direct drive, with an air cooled engine driving a weedless prop, underneath. The ones I rode in had Wisconsin twins. I think the "Go Devil" was an adaptation of the same principle, just a lot easier to deal with.

Louisiana guy here. Those are so common around here that seeing one isn't a big issue. They are used on mudboats in the swamps.

Re: Dig This Outboard!

We were sitting in the duck blind early one morning and kept hearing what sounded like a lawnmower coming down the river towards us, turns out to be one of those go-devils on the guy's boat. One speed, not fast but great for mud boating when the float road is low. Sure beats pushing the boat by hand through the muck to get to the river.
