Digital analyzer for tach

I've had a smooth running 1970 135 hp merc for 10 yrs. It is missing tach but wiring is still there. I'm hesitant to hook up new tach and cause other misc.problems with old wiring, swith boxes, stators, etc.<br /> Can I use a "ALLTEST" digital engine analyzer to check rpms safely without shorting something out? This would be a one time check just for my records on WOT RPMS and idle. "if it aint broke...don't fix it" comes to mind.....thanks

If you are afraid of using that particular analyzer, you probably have access to a timing light with a built-in tach feature. That would be the safest. Connect the inductive pickup to a plug wire and see what ya got. Zero chance of screwing something up unless you get your shirt caught in the flywheel.

Re: Digital analyzer for tach

I've got the timing light but no built in tach. I bid on an exact match tach on ebay but lost because out of town. I'll keep trying. The little analyzer should work but I dont know how to safely hook it up.Directions say: "connect red test lead to (-)negative terminal of coil". That connection leads direct to a swithbox and im electronically paranoid. thanks fer trying
