Hello all,

Ok, so i want to redo my boat with an all digital dash. Rpm, temp, batery voltage, ect...
Now i have seen on ebay universal rpm, temp ect.. gauges. Can i use these universal gauges,
and hook up my temp, rpm, ect.. wires to these digital ones and still work? They all have red
pos and blaci neg wires, and a green wire for rpm signal or temp signal. Or will i have to run
new wiring for these? This is being done on a1988 Mercury 100hp 2+2.
Here are the gauges thanks for any tips or advise.

Mike

Re: Digital dash

more of a car guy here....but....as far as i know your digi-guages will need matching sending units, and as far as i know frm what i have read here, they are specific tachs for OBs....but still questioning that myself??????

Re: Digital dash

Outboard tachometers run on stator pulses. These are not the same as auto tachs that run on coil pulses. Usually water pressure gauges are preferred over temp gauges. The voltmeter should work OK.

I am no longer questioning that tach specification...but it seems odd that one cant wire an auto tach to the ignition wiring if they wanted to? and for the OP....you may hate those digitals in the sunlight?

Re: Digital dash

Delirious, Outboard ign systems are usually multicoil (one coil per cylinder), and outboards can have 1,2 3,4, 6 or 8 cylinders. In addition, most OBs are 2 cycle. Universal Outbaord Tachometers are therefore designed to count stator pulses, as most OBs have standard stator coils. You may be able to get a Tach that can be adaped to work, if you look around.

Let's say you had a 4 cylinder 2 cycle outboard with distributor ign. Perhaps a standard auto tach would work. However, the Mercury version of that motor had a CDI unit that pulsed the coil when it was time to fire. It was not the standard battery/coil setup used in cars at the time. I am describing an early 70s Merc Outboard BTW. These transitioned to muti coil ADI ignition in about 1976.
